2007/2008 Sabourin Lake Lodge Newsletter

Winter is back and so are we! We're looking forward to returning to Sabourin for the summer of 2008 and for many years to come. We missed working with the staff and visiting with all our guests. Ron and Shirley Williams son, John and his wife Donna, are taking an active role in the management of Sabourin so that Ron and Shirley can reduce the amount of time they spend at the helm. We feel very fortunate to still have Ron and Shirley's experience and expertise and to be able to work with the enthusiasm and energy of the next generation of the Williams family. You can rest assured that that the tradition of great service and excellent facilities will continue at Sabourin.

Some of the planned improvements for next summer are eight new boats, upgraded boat seats, seat cushions, lifejackets, and fish finders for the fleet. By the end of the season we're hoping to complete a screened-in porch for cabin # 4, and upgrade the cabins with new carpets and sinks. Staff cabins will be built and we are looking at changing the shore lunch shed and the docks at the bottom end.

An on-going problem with the commercial airlines is the aggravation of luggage not arriving with the passenger. We certainly understand how upsetting this is for everyone, and we try to ensure that the missing baggage comes into camp on the next available flight. Please remember to pack your carry-on luggage with any essential medications you require and a basic change of clothes. At camp we will invest in better fishing equipment and a variety of clothes that can be borrowed, washed and lent to the next person in need.

We were pleased that fourteen people earned the “Grand Slam” award this year. This award is given to those who catch a trophy northern, walleye, bass and trout in one season. These skilled anglers were Rickey Hall, Sharon Enderlin, Debbie Holder, Kaye Hafner, Steve Lindquist, Art Wittern, Misty Wittern, Jimmy Chico, Chuck Johnson, George Bauman, Rick Runyon, Todd Harris, Sam Best and Paul Tornatore. If we missed anyone who should be included on the “wall of fame”, please drop us an e-mail so that we can have your name engraved and added to the Grand Slam trophy plaque that is proudly displayed on the fireplace wall in the lounge.

Canada One Travel Planners continue to be successful in obtaining cheaper commercial airfare into Winnipeg where there is no Saturday night stay required. They have let us know that the rules and regulations have remained the same but there is now tighter control of seat availability. With the limited space, we recommend booking early to ensure you receive the best possible schedule at valued pricing. Please contact Gwen Stone at: gstone@canada-one.com. Her toll free phone number is 1-866-401-9900 ext. 650 and the direct line to her desk is 1-204-663-6260.

If you drive to Red Lake, we meet our guests at the Kenora Airways base. The base is approximately 2 miles before Red Lake so you take a right on Highway # 125 towards Cochenour. Travel approximately 7 miles down that road, drive past the Red Lake Airport and take the first street to the right. Follow the street past the mine and the base is on your left, signs should be posted. Parking is free at the base. Their phone number is 807-662-3333.

The entire staff at Sabourin Lake Lodge would like to take this opportunity to wish you health and happiness in the coming year.
